Overview of different Roulette Variants

Roulette is a mini wheel game with 37 slots(1 to 36) of different colors as red, black, and green. All the roulette wheels are by default considered as European Roulette unless it is not stated before the game. American roulette has 38 slots i.e. one more 00 slots is added in this version. French Roulette is the complex variant of all with a different set of Rules as La Partage and En Prison.

Basically, you’ll find two categories of bets in the traditional Roulette game. These names have been derived from number positions on the table layout.

  • Inside bets
  • Outside bets

Inside Bets

These bets are placed on the original numbers or number grids. Inside bets have less odds of winning are not considered as the best bets in roulette. But if a player is lucky and strategic, the payouts are high and the house edge is on the low side. You’ll find six commonly used inside bets. Let’s discuss them in detail!

Straight bets:  Also referred to as single number bets. Payout is the highest as 35:1 with the least chances of winning. The odds of winning in European Roulette are 2.70% whereas 2.63% in American Roulette.

Split Bets: You’ll get the opportunity to place a bet on two numbers out of 37. The condition is that the numbers to be bet on must be the neighboring numbers. The payout for this bet is 17:1 which is quite high. The odds of winning are higher than the straight bets. At the European table, you’ll get 5.46% while at American version is 5.26%.

Street Bets:  The bet is placed on three Numbers; the conditions are that all the numbers should be in a single row. For e.g.: 7, 8, 9 and 22,23,24.The winning payouts are 11:1. The odds of winning are 8.11% in Europe and 7.89% in American roulette.

Corner bets: The name reveals itself i.e. bet will be placed only on 4 corner numbers that will form a square. Example: 1,2,4 and 5 in European roulette. The winning payout is 8:1 and the odds of winning are 10.81% on European Roulette, and 10.53% on its American variant of roulette.

Double Street bet: It is the double of the street bet is just what it sounds like. That means you have to bet on a total of 6 numbers from two rows. The winning payout is 5:1, and the odds of winning are 16.22% in European and 15.79% for the American Roulette wheel.

Basket bet: The bet is placed on five numbers and is used only in American roulette. You are allowed to bet on the zero (0), double zero(00), 1, 2, and 3. This bet will pay 6:1 and the chances of winning are 13.16%.

The best bets: Outside bets

These bets are placed on a pair or combination of numbers. A total of 12 numbers can be used. These bets are placed outside the grids of numbers that’s the reason they are known as the outside bets. Outside bets have the highest chances of winning but RTP is low and the house edge is higher. But it doesn’t matter when you are on the winning side and have something in your hand than nothing. The 5 most common outside bets are discussed below:

  • High/Low bets: The bet is simply placed on low (1-18) and high numbers (19- 36)
  • Even /Odd bets: you have to bet on an even or an odd number of the table. As 0 and 00 are also involved in this bet, so the odds of winning are reduced to 47.37% In American and 48.65% In European roulette.
  • Red/Black bets:  The simplest and easy of all bets and is placed on the color of the number as marked on the table.

All these 3 above-mentioned bets pay 1:1 and have 50-50 chances of winning. So that’s a much better option than straight bets where you’ll get 2.7% chances of winning.
The Column Bets: The bet has to be placed on one of the three columns of twelve numbers as described below:

Column 1 – 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34

Column 2 – 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, 35

Column 3 –  T 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36

Dozen Bets:  The bet is placed on first dozen(1-12) , middle dozen(13-24) and last dozen(25-36) of numbers.

The payout is 2:1 and the odds of winning in the above said two bets are 32.43% in the European version and 31.58% in American roulette.

Announced bets/ Call bets

Moving further, we have one more category of bet that is used mostly in French Roulette and European Roulette sometimes. As it is used in French Variant so the individual bets have French names. These bets are known as Announced bets or call bets. The reason they are known by these names because you don’t have to directly put your money on the table or we can say gambling is done on credit. There are two types of these announced bets as fixed and variable. Here are different call bets:

Voisins du Zero/ Neighbors of Zero

Also referred to as a grand series. This bet covers 17 numbers on the wheel; all of the numbers should be close to 0 which is marked green on the table. The player has to move 9 chips on the table to cover all the numbers. The chances of winning are 45.9%. Payout is not fixed in this particular bet. The neighbors of zero are numbers are from 22 to 25. (22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25.)

Zero Game/ Jeu Zero

This is a shorter version of the Neighbours of Zero, which covers only 7 numbers close to zero that are 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15. Here 4 chips are required instead of 9. 3 out of 4 chips are placed on the splits and the rest 1 is placed on the straight bet (26). The odds of winnings are 18.9%, and RTP is 26:1.

Tiers du Cylindre /Thirds of the Wheel

The bet is almost similar to the dozen/ column inside bets. It is placed on 12 numbers between 27 and 33(27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33.) across the neighbors of zero. 6 chips are placed on the table. The payout is fixed at 17:1 and winning odds are 32.4%/

Orphelins/ The Orphan

This bet covers all the numbers except the mentioned numbers in the above-said bets. The bet is placed on 8 numbers; 17, 34, 6, 1, 20, 14, 31, and 9. The winning odds are 21.6%, and the payout is not fixed it can be either 35:1 or 17:1 depending on the scenario.

Some additional Roulette bets

Final Bets: This bet can be placed only on a single 0 Roulette wheel. The bet is placed on the final digit and is pronounced as Final 4, finaal 7, and so on. Below are some popular final bets used in different roulette variants except American Roulette that has 38 slots.

  • Final 0:0, 10, 20, 30
  • Final 1:1, 11, 21, 31
